The Unsinkable Henry Morgan Hits Sundance This Weekend
This past Tuesday I attended a screening of The Unsinkable Henry Morgan, a 30 minute documentary that will air on the Sundance Channel this Sunday night. The film will also be showcased at Sundance over the weekend.
The documentary follows underwater archeologist Fritz Hanselmann and a team of specialists who conducted an archeological expedition in Panama with the hopes of finding five ships that Morgan lost in 1671 by the Lajas Reef. Among the ships lost was Morgan’s flagship, The Satisfaction.
The documentary covers the crew’s work that was conducted this past summer, but the story really starts back in 2010, when Hanselmann discovered six iron cannons belonging to Sir Henry Morgan himself. After receiving funding from the Captain Morgan rum brand, Hanselmann has been able to go back to Panama each summer to try and uncover more historical goodies found in the lost wreckage of a ship that dates back to the same era.
Directed by Michael Haussman, the documentary is put together really well. The film provides a good bit of history into this Captain Morgan’s pirating ways, British challenges to the Spanish Main and Morgan’s impact on the history of Panama. You get into the characters as the try to rebuild/revisit the world of Captain Henry Morgan. And Fritz Hanselmann is just a badass.
Here’s the trailer:
So basically its 30 minutes well spent. After you’re done watching football this weekend, make sure to queue it up on your DVR. Oh, and the film is best viewed with a Captain Morgan cocktail in your hand (trust me). Here’s some Captain cocktail inspiration from the screening:

In Search of the Real Captain Morgan
You know Captain Morgan. He’s that jolly pirate with a familiar stance and a fondness for spiced rum. He’s a pop culture icon who sports a recognizable wardrobe and likes to be paired with Coke. But Captain Morgan is more than just a Caribbean rum mascot. The real life Henry Morgan was one of the most notorious privateers of all time. He carried with him a Letter of Marque issued by the British government and the Governor of Jamaica to fight the Spanish on behalf of England. He raided the centers of wealth and influence on the Spanish Main, amassing the largest fleet in the history of the Caribbean. The loot he collected from his adventures was his reward.
Morgan’s mythical status has grown over the centuries, but the real Henry Morgan is resurfacing in the Chagres River in Panama. For the past three years, the Captain Morgan brand has teamed up with a crew of US archaeologists to search for Morgan’s lost fleet. The effort first began in September 2010, when the team discovered six cannon that belonged to Morgan. Last summer, they located a wooden shipwreck from the 17th century. This wreck could be one of the five ships that Morgan lost on the Lajas Reef in 1671.
This summer, the team returned to excavate the wreckage. They uncovered swords, chests, cargo seals and wooden barrels (which, in all likelihood, don’t contain 340-year-old rum). These artifacts are now being preserved in Panama City so that their origins can be verified. They will remain the property of the Panamanian government and be displayed at the Patronato Panamá Viejo in Panama City.
Morgan and his men were able to overcome Fort San Lorenzo at Charges and take Panama. At the time, Panama City was considered the capital of Spanish America and was one of the richest cities in the world. The raid was a success, but poorly timed. After the city was captured and looted, word arrived that England had signed a peace treaty with Spain. By the time Morgan returned to Port Royal, Jamaica, the governor had been arrested and shipped back to England. Morgan soon suffered a similar fate.
But his exile in England didn’t last long. As tensions with the Dutch flared up in the West Indies, the King sought the advice of the celebrated buccaneer. Morgan’s tactical recommendations put him in good favor with Charles II, and before too long Morgan was knighted by the king and sent back to Jamaica to serve as deputy governor.
With his swashbuckling days behind him, Morgan’s life took a more respectable turn. He began overseeing matters of state and grew rich from his sugar plantations. Ever the survivor, Morgan outmaneuvered his political adversaries. After being relieved of his duties, Morgan would reclaim his spot on the governing council at Port Royal and remain there until his death in 1688.
So pretty cool stuff. If you like pirates and shipwrecks and rum and archaeology and feel-good rogue-to-riches stories, there’s a lot to love here. Just check out some photos of the excavation efforts:

The Winner of the Captain Morgan 2011 BracketMaster Challenge
All good things must come to an end. Just like the real NCAA tournament, the Captain Morgan BracketMaster Championship presented by Spike.com is coming to a close today. It was fun participating in this tournament that featured 32 gorgeous gals teaming up with 32 men’s sites to see who would be crowned the Ultimate Morganette. We made it to the Sweet 16 serving as an honorary coach to Erica M, but we couldn’t get past Kelly from Ft. Lauderdale, who went on to compete in the finals.
Kelly beat out Nicole from Austin Texas to take the crown as the 2011 Ultimate Morganette national champion. With Joshua Estrin of Examiner and Celeb Buzzz in her corner, Kelly tore through the South and finished first in the final voting match up.
Here’s a full list of all the Morganettes and participating sites:

Captain Morgan’s BracketMaster Elite 8
So we didn’t make it to the next round of the Captain Morgan’s Bracketmaster Tournament presented by Spike.com, but you can still pick winners in the Elite 8 for a chance to win some great prizes. The remaining bracket is basically a consolation bracket where you pick who you think will win in the Elite 8, Final Four and Championship match up.
We think that Kelly from Ft. Lauderdale is going to win it all. She took out our girl Erica, in the Sweet 16 and it looks like she’s going to make a solid run to the final match up.
You can visit bracketmaster.spike.com to make your selections in the consolation bracket. Voting for the Elite 8 round ends this Friday. Good luck!

Last Chance to Vote for the Round of 32 in the 2011 Captain Morgan BracketMaster Challenge
Today is the last day to fill out your complete bracket for the 2011 Captain Morgan BracketMaster Challenge presented by Spike.com. If you haven’t yet done so, head over to bracketmaster.spike.com and make your selections for the Round of 32 now. You can win all kinds of cash and prizes including a $15,000 grand prize home entertainment system.
When you make your picks, be sure to vote for MANjr Morganette Erica Moore from Jacksonville in the South division. We got the opportunity to serve as an honorary Morganette coach for this tourney, and we want to make sure our girl wins it all!
What makes Erica Moore so perfectly suited to be the Ultimate Morganette you ask? Well first off, she’s totally gorgeous:
As you can see, The Captain will be in good company when Erica makes her way through the tournament and wins this thing. Undisputed hotness aside, Erica’s the type of girl who just likes to go out and have fun. And she’s totally comfortable hangin’ with the boys.
“I’m definitely a guy’s girl. I like sports. I’m not worried about gettin’ dirty or goin’ out. I go to the beach all the time and ride bikes. That’s really big here. Sunday fun days are big. We go down to the beach with a bunch of people and just enjoy the day. I’m fun. I’m always down for a good time. I’m not Debbie Downer – I gotta go out, have a good time and make sure everyone’s having fun too. You have to enjoy your life!”
So what kinds of sports does she like?
“I grew up playing pretty much every sport you can imagine. I played it, or at least tried to play it. My favorite sport to play would be volleyball. I played forever, so that one is near and dear to my heart. But as far as watching sports, I love football. That’s my favorite sport to go and watch.”
And being from Jacksonville, you know she supports the Jags.
“Absolutely, those are my boys. That’s my team and Jones-Drew is my favorite.”
And for March Madness, Erica’s got some strong feelings on who she’ll be supporting.
“As far as college basketball goes, the Florida Gators are my team. I grew up a Gator girl, so I keep pretty good tabs on all their sports.”
So Erica loves sports, she’s a guy’s girl and she’s into going out, enjoying life and having a good time. Her favorite drink is Captain Diet and she’s ridiculously good looking. Does this not sound like the Ultimate Morganette to you?
In addition to visiting the bracketmaster.spike.com site, Morganette voters can also text “ERICAM” to 44686 and as Erica told us, there’s no limit to the number of times you can text a vote for her from your phone.
“You can text as many times as you want. All day long. Till your phone dies, till your fingers fall off. You can just text and text as much as you want!”
With the Round of 32 coming to a close tomorrow, Erica will need your support in the Sweet 16. You can still win prizes for picking in the Round of 16, so make sure you visit the site, send in a text and support our girl Erica!
